Kailua-Kona History
It was here, in the small fishing village of Kailua-Kona that King Kamehameha chose to spend his last years. The island’s location made it an ideal spot for this great king and sovereign ruler because during those days navigation depended on knowledge of ocean currents – something Hawaiians who lived near shores knew quite well. King Liholiho, who is notorious for abolishing the kapu system that enforced a harsh code of conduct on natives by punishing violators with death, also lived in Kailua-Kona.
Missionaries first took residence in the 1800s and built churches. They planted coffee on the slopes of Hualalai Volcano as well. High-rise buildings and bustling streets now occupy the once sleepy fishing village. The region transformed from a quiet 1800’s fishing town to a booming port of commerce in this wake.
