Goal of the Workshop
The overarching goal of this workshop is to empower teens with the skills and knowledge to make sound financial choices. By teaching them the importance of budgeting, saving, and understanding credit, we aim to set them up for financial success in the future. Our goal is to help teens develop a strong foundation for achieving their life goals, whether it’s saving for a graduation party, college tuition, or their first car.
Exercise: Creating Savings Plans
One of the exercises during the workshop involved creating savings plans to reach short-term, intermediate, and long-term goals. Students identified short-term goals such as purchasing basketball shoes and a baseball bat. A long-term goal identified by one of the students was saving for a graduation party in the next school year. This exercise encouraged students to think about their financial goals and develop actionable plans to achieve them.
Short-term savings goals
Short-term savings goals are usually goals that can be achieved within a year or less. These goals can include purchasing items you want or need, saving for a special occasion or event, or building an emergency fund. By setting short-term savings goals, you can develop healthy spending habits and avoid impulsive purchases.
Long-term savings goal
A long-term savings goal is a goal that takes more time and effort to achieve. Examples of long-term goals include saving for higher education, buying a house, or starting a business. By starting early and consistently saving for these goals, you can build a solid financial foundation for your future.
