The small village of Hanalei is home to the beautiful and scenic Hanalei Bay which has been enjoyed by visitors for years. The northern coast on Kauai offers miles of sandy beaches that are perfect for water sports, as well as a gateway into the enchanting Hanalei Valley where hiking trails await you through lush green forests and past cascading waterfalls.

The Waioli Mission House is a relic of the past, and one can almost imagine an old missionary walking up to it. The building was erected in 1841 as a house for Kalanimoku’s sister-in-law and her family. It now functions as a community center on the edge of Honolulu Village Road 588 where you will also find Waiola Church – which has stained glass windows that are reminiscent of another era gone by.

The beautiful Hanalei Valley is best seen from the lookout on Road 560. The river that runs through it glistens like a silver thread, providing life to all of its inhabitants–taro fields and sugar cane patches fill in much of this valley’s fertile landscape. Mountains provide an excellent backdrop for the vista before you here at Hanalei Lookout; you’ll never see anything finer!

This is a small area that is filled with excellent surf and there are often tournaments held at the beach during the summer months. The other beach on Kauai that is often frequented by surfers is Black Pearl beach which is also a short drive from Hanalei Bay.
