Immerse yourself in a genuine Hawaiian culture and take a journey back to a special time in the past.
Haleo Luau invites you to take part in a remarkable evening where you celebrate the beautiful history of Keauhou and the people who came from this historical place.
Haleo Luau is held at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa, next to the iconic Keauhou Bay, where King Kamehameha III was born – the longest-reigning monarch in ancient Hawaii. The bay was once a favorite retreat for Hawaiian royalty. Nearby is the Lekeleke Burial Grounds, where ancient Hawaiian warriors were laid to rest following a vicious religious battle in 1819. With Keauhou Bay’s intriguing historical sites, complemented by its underwater playground, join Haleo Luau to celebrate this great cultural destination on Big Island.
As soon as you arrive, you will immediately feel like you are part of the ohana with a warm lei greeting. You can order drinks from a wide array of beverages from the open bar to begin your evening, including coffee, Mai Tai, wine, sodas, beer, and other cocktails. The program officially begins with impressive torch lighting. You will also have a chance to meet the gorgeous, friendly, and multi-talented performers to have souvenir photos. To learn more about Hawaiian traditions, you can participate in activities and games prepared just for you. Ancient Hawaiians enjoyed games and sports. During the Makahiki, a four-month harvest festival from mid-October to mid-February, men and women played sports competitively. Basically, the importance of ancient games was to train warriors.
You can also learn about the fascinating cultures of Hawaii through arts and crafts, which are displayed on the luau grounds. Did you know that Hawaiians were some of the best artists in Polynesia many centuries ago? In fact, they arrived on the island on an outrigger canoe – a specialized boat that they carved from a fine koa tree. If time permits, you can also learn the hula – a sensuous Hawaiian dance accompanied by instruments and chants.
When it’s time for feasting, enjoy your family-style dinner with a wide array of options, including Lomi Lomi salmon, poi, soy stained glass noodle salad, teriyaki steak, mixed greens, desserts, and many more!
As the sun starts to set and illuminates on the Keauhou Bay, a spectacular Hawaiian show will begin! Through lively music and dance, you will find out important historical Hawaiian events – from the birth of King Kamehameha III to the surfing stories of He’eia Bay. You will be taken on an amazing journey – from ancient Hawaiian hula to modern music.
