Amenities

All surfboard equipment is provided for your session, including soft-top foam boards sized appropriately for your skill level and body type — no need to haul gear or rent separately. This matters practically because the right board size dramatically affects how quickly you'll stand up and stay standing, and your instructor will make that call for you before you even hit the water.
Rash guards are available to protect against both board rash and Kauai's strong South Shore sun, which can be deceptively intense even on overcast mornings. Wearing one means you can focus entirely on your surfing instead of flinching every time you drag across the deck — a small thing that makes a big difference over a 90-minute session.

Special Instruction

One Instructor. One Student. Real Progress.

Your First Ride at Koloa's South Shore

There’s a specific moment every first-timer describes — the instant the wave catches the board and your instructor shouts ‘go, go, go’ and suddenly you’re actually moving, not just floating. The South Shore break here is forgiving enough that your first real ride usually happens within the first 30 minutes, not at the end of the day. That rush of warm salt spray and the feeling of the board planing underneath you is something your body remembers long after the sunburn fades.

Instructor Feedback in Real Time, Every Wave

In a group lesson, you wait your turn and try to remember what the instructor said on the beach. Here, your coach is in the water next to you, correcting your paddle stroke before the wave even arrives, repositioning your hands on the board between sets. After just a few waves, the adjustments start to click — your pop-up gets quicker, your stance gets lower, and the rides get longer. That real-time feedback loop is exactly what the $250 price tag buys you.

What the South Shore Looks Like from the Water

Paddling out past the break with nothing but the green ridgeline of Kauai’s interior rising behind the shoreline is a view you can’t get from a beach chair or a snorkel float. Between sets, when the ocean goes briefly quiet, you’re just sitting on your board in chest-deep warm water watching the next swell roll in from the horizon — and that stillness hits differently when you’ve earned it. The 1.5 hours goes fast, and that pause between waves is the part nobody mentions but everybody remembers.

Private Surfing Lesson – Exclusive Coaching: Frequently Asked Questions

  • No prior experience is required — this lesson is genuinely designed for complete beginners and the South Shore location is chosen specifically because it offers manageable, consistent waves for learning. That said, if you’ve surfed before and want to work on a specific skill like your pop-up timing, cross-stepping, or reading breaks, tell your instructor upfront and they’ll build the session around your goals rather than starting from scratch.

  • In a group lesson, one instructor manages four to eight students simultaneously, which means you get maybe 10 to 15 minutes of actual individual coaching spread across 90 minutes. In this private session, every correction, every wave choice, and every piece of feedback is directed at you and only you for the full 1.5 hours. Most guests report standing up and riding waves reliably by the end of this session — a milestone that can take two or three group lessons to reach.

  • Generally yes — the South Shore, particularly around Koloa and Poipu, tends to produce mellower, slower-breaking waves compared to Kauai’s notoriously heavy North Shore during winter swells. However, ocean conditions on Kauai change daily, and your instructor will assess conditions on the morning of your lesson and select the safest, most appropriate break. If conditions are unexpectedly rough, sessions may be adjusted or rescheduled.

  • Wear a swimsuit you can move freely in — board shorts, a one-piece, or a bikini with good coverage all work fine. A rash guard is provided, but you’re welcome to wear your own. Bring reef-safe sunscreen applied well before you arrive, a towel, and a change of dry clothes for after. Leave valuables, rings, and loose accessories in the car — the ocean near Koloa has a mild current and small items lost in a wipeout stay lost.

  • Honest answer: paddling uses muscles most people don’t train regularly, and after 90 minutes of popping up, paddling back out, and falling sideways, you will feel it in your shoulders, core, and hip flexors. Most people are pleasantly tired rather than destroyed — but if you have shoulder injuries or limited upper-body mobility, mention it to your instructor before the session starts so they can modify technique accordingly. Staying hydrated before you arrive helps more than people expect.

  • The listing specifies all ages are welcome, and Kauai’s South Shore is one of the more family-friendly surf environments on the island for younger students. Kids tend to respond especially well to one-on-one instruction because the instructor can stay physically close to them in the water throughout the session. If you’re booking for a keiki, mention their age and approximate size at the time of booking so the right board can be selected in advance.
