Amenities

All surfboards and rash guards are provided for the duration of your lesson, so you don't need to haul gear from your hotel or rent anything separately. The boards are large, stable foam longboards — the kind that actually float well and give beginners a fighting chance at standing up on their first or second wave.
Your instructor ratio of 2-3 students per coach means you're getting coaching that's close to private-level without the private-lesson price tag. You'll receive real-time feedback on your paddle technique, your positioning on the board, and your pop-up — not just a quick demo on the sand followed by being sent out alone.

Special Instruction

Stand Up on Hanalei Bay's Perfect Waves

Your First Real Ride at Hanalei

There’s a specific moment when the wave takes the board and you feel the push from behind — that’s when your instructor is yelling and you either freeze or you pop up. When you stand, even for a few seconds, and you see the green cliffs of Hanalei framing everything around you, it hits differently than any beach photo could prepare you for.

Small Group Energy, Real Coaching

With only two or three of you in the water with one instructor, there’s none of the chaos you get in a big group lesson where half the class is just floating and waiting. Your coach paddles alongside you, reads the sets, and tells you exactly which wave to take — and that individualized attention is what actually gets people standing up by the end of 90 minutes.

The Gear, the Name, and What It Means

When they hand you a board with Titus Kinimaka’s name behind it, that’s not just branding — Titus is a living legend of Hawaiian surfing, a North Shore pioneer who grew up riding these exact waters. There’s something grounding about waxing up a board connected to that lineage, feeling the weight of it under your arm as you walk across the black sand toward the break. The rash guard goes on, the salt air hits, and you realize you’re not just taking a surf lesson — you’re stepping into a tradition that runs deep on this island.

Semi-Private Surf Lesson – Small Group Focus: Frequently Asked Questions

  • You should be comfortable in the ocean and able to swim at a basic level — you don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but you need to be calm in moving water. Hanalei Bay’s beginner surf area is relatively protected and shallow, but waves are unpredictable by nature, and being able to swim back to your board after a wipeout is essential for your own safety.

  • Hanalei has a dedicated beginner zone with small, slow-rolling waves that are genuinely well-suited for first-timers — it’s not the powerful, barreling surf you see in photos of the bay during winter swells. Summer months tend to offer the calmest conditions, and even in shoulder seasons the instructors know exactly where to position beginners for the most forgiving waves.

  • A standard group lesson on Kauai can have 6, 8, or even 10 students per instructor, which means your coach is spread thin and you spend a lot of time waiting and watching others. This semi-private format caps the group at 2-3 students per instructor, so you get real feedback on your specific technique rather than general instruction shouted at the whole group.

  • Wear a swimsuit you can move freely in — board shorts or a one-piece work better than a loose bikini for paddling. Rash guards are provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer. Bring reef-safe sunscreen already applied, a towel, and water. Leave valuables at your accommodation since there’s no secure storage at the beach.

  • Most people with no surfing experience stand up at least once during this 90-minute lesson — the combination of Hanalei’s gentle beginner waves, large foam boards, and the close instructor attention in a 2-3 person group genuinely improves your odds compared to a crowded class. That said, surfing involves real physical coordination and some people need a second session before things click, which is completely normal.

  • The lesson is listed as all ages, and kids often do remarkably well because they’re lighter on the board and less tense than adults. There’s no published minimum age, but younger keiki should be comfortable in the ocean and able to follow basic instructions — if you’re booking for a child under 8, it’s worth contacting the school directly to confirm they can accommodate your child’s size and swim ability.
