Amenities

All necessary surf equipment is provided, including a foam longboard sized for your height and weight and a rash guard to protect against board rash and sun. You won't need to rent or haul anything — just show up at the beach and your instructor will have everything ready on the sand before the lesson begins.
Professional, patient instruction from certified surf coaches who know Hanalei Bay's breaks intimately is included in the lesson price. The group format keeps class sizes small enough that instructors can give real-time feedback during your pop-ups on the beach and watch your positioning in the water — this isn't a hands-off experience where you're left to figure it out alone.

First Waves at Hanalei Bay

The Pop-Up Moment on the Sand

Before you ever touch the ocean, you’ll practice your pop-up on the beach — hands flat on the board, one explosive push, feet landing wide. It feels awkward the first five times and then suddenly, on your sixth try, it clicks. That’s the moment every first-timer remembers.

Riding Whitewater Under Na Pali Light

When the wave catches you and you’re actually standing — even for two seconds — the view hits differently. The green ridgelines of the Hanalei Valley are directly in front of you, the warm bay water is swirling around your ankles as you step off, and the whole beach feels like it’s cheering. It’s loud and quiet at the same time.

What Titus's Coaches Actually Teach You in the Water

Once you’re past the shore break, your instructor paddles right alongside you, calling out which waves to skip and which ones to take — and that read-the-water instinct is worth more than any YouTube tutorial. You feel a swell lift the back of your board, hear ‘paddle now,’ and your arms are already moving before your brain catches up. By the end of the session you’re not just standing up, you’re starting to understand why some waves work and others don’t.

Basic Group Surf Lesson – Beginner Friendly: FAQs

  • Zero experience required — this lesson is built specifically for people who have never stood on a surfboard. The first portion happens entirely on the beach where instructors walk you through the pop-up, body positioning, and how to read the whitewater before you ever paddle out. Most first-timers stand up on their first or second wave attempt in the bay’s gentle conditions.

  • During this beginner lesson, you’ll be surfing in the whitewater — the broken, foamy section of the wave closest to shore, not the open face. Hanalei Bay is specifically chosen for its consistency and mellowness for beginners, and the whitewater in the lesson zone is typically 1-2 feet, enough to ride but not enough to intimidate. Note that North Shore swells can change seasonally; lessons may be relocated or rescheduled if conditions are unsafe.

  • Wear a swimsuit you can move freely in — board shorts or a one-piece, not a bikini top that shifts around when you’re paddling hard. Rash guards are provided, so you don’t need to bring your own. Pack reef-safe sunscreen already applied before you arrive, a towel, water, and dry clothes. Leave valuables in your car or accommodation; there’s no secure storage at the beach.

  • Yes, the lesson is open to all ages, and Titus Kinimaka’s instructors are well-practiced at teaching keiki alongside adults in the same group. Younger kids tend to pop up faster and with less overthinking than adults — the foam boards are buoyant and stable, making them ideal for smaller riders. If you’re booking for a full ohana, just make sure to note any young children when booking so instructors can plan accordingly.

  • Rain alone won’t cancel a surf lesson in Kauai — the North Shore gets frequent passing showers and they rarely affect lesson quality. If conditions at Hanalei are genuinely unsafe due to swell size, strong currents, or storm surf, the school will contact you to reschedule or relocate to a calmer break. It’s worth checking in with the operator the evening before your lesson if a significant swell is in the forecast.

  • At $100, the group lesson costs significantly less than a private session while still giving you hands-on instruction and real-time feedback in the water. The tradeoff is that your instructor is managing multiple students, so you won’t get the same one-on-one attention throughout every wave. For most beginners, the group format is more than enough to get standing on a board — the energy of learning alongside other first-timers actually makes it more fun than a solo session for a lot of people.
