Amenities

All surfboard equipment is provided, and your instructor will select the right board size for your skill level before you ever hit the water. This matters more than it sounds — riding a board that's too short or too narrow for a beginner is the number-one reason first-timers wash out before they ever stand up, and your coach won't let that happen.
Rash guard use is included, which protects your chest and stomach from the inevitable wax rash that comes with learning to paddle and pop up repeatedly on a foam deck. If you've never had surf rash, trust the locals on this one — you'll be grateful for it after your fifteenth attempt at standing.

Special Instruction

One Coach, One Student, One Perfect Wave

Your First Clean Pop-Up at Koloa

There’s a specific moment every first-timer describes — you feel the wave catch the tail of the board, your instructor shouts ‘now,’ and suddenly your feet are under you and the water is rushing past. It lasts maybe four seconds. Your instructor is already in the water next to you, grinning, telling you exactly what your back foot did right.

Reading the Break Like a Local

Between sets, your coach doesn’t just let you float and recover — they point out the patterns, show you where the water pushes left, explain why that wave closed out while the one beside it peeled cleanly. By the end of 90 minutes, you’re not just following instructions; you’re actually starting to see the ocean differently.

Paddling Out Past the Break

Your arms are burning before you even catch your first wave — your instructor shows you how to angle the nose, time your paddle strokes against the whitewater, and use the lull between sets to push through without getting pushed back to shore. That moment when you finally clear the break and feel the quiet swell lifting you from underneath, no foam, no churn — that’s when the South Shore stops feeling like something you’re fighting and starts feeling like something you’re part of. It’s a small thing, but your shoulders remember it the whole drive back.

Activity Details
There’s nothing quite like catching your first wave in Hawaiʻi. This lesson is built to give you that moment—safely and with clear, patient coaching. Your professional surf instructor starts by teaching you the correct stance and how to move on the board while it’s laid out on the sand. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you’ll head into the water together.

Out in the lineup, your instructor will position the group where the waves are breaking, tell you when to start paddling, and cue you when it’s time to stand. You’ll be guided through each attempt, so you’re never left guessing what to do next.

Class sizes are intentionally kept small, typically 4–6 students, so everyone gets individual attention. If you’re traveling with a larger group, arrangements can be made in advance to ensure everyone learns in a safe, organized environment.

This lesson is ideal for both kids and adults—if you’ve ever wanted to try surfing in Hawaiʻi, this is your chance.

Hawaii Private Lesson – Expert One-on-One: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, this lesson is genuinely built for beginners and your instructor will start from scratch if needed — no assumed knowledge, no rushed timeline. The South Shore breaks at Koloa are well-suited for first-timers, with a sandy bottom, manageable wave height in most conditions, and enough consistency that you’ll actually get multiple attempts at standing rather than just paddling around waiting for the right wave.

  • In a private lesson, the instructor’s eyes are on you every single second — your paddling form, your weight distribution, your timing — and they can correct a bad habit in the moment rather than after you’ve repeated it twenty times. Group lessons are a solid introduction to surfing, but they split attention across multiple students, which means feedback is delayed and generic. If you want to actually improve technique in one session rather than just have a fun splash, private instruction is the only way to do it efficiently.

  • You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should know that paddling works your shoulders, chest, and lower back harder than most people expect — it’s the part nobody prepares for. Most guests are sore in their upper body the next day, which is completely normal. If you have significant shoulder injuries or limited upper body mobility, mention it to your instructor before the session so they can adjust the technique they teach you.

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen applied before you arrive, a swimsuit or board shorts you can move in, and a change of dry clothes for after. Leave the jewelry at the hotel — rings and bracelets catch on wax and can get lost in the break. A small towel and a bottle of water for post-session are smart additions, since 90 minutes in the Kauai sun and saltwater will leave you thirsty and ready to sit down.

  • This lesson is listed as all ages, and keiki often pick up the pop-up faster than adults because they have zero fear and low center of gravity — instructors love teaching kids for exactly this reason. For very young children, around five or six, it’s worth calling ahead to confirm the instructor is comfortable with that age group and to discuss any specific concerns. The one-on-one format actually works especially well for children because the instructor can adjust pace, board size, and instruction style completely to the individual child.

  • Blue Seas Surfing School monitors conditions closely and will communicate with you if the ocean is unsafe or unsuitable for instruction — Kauai’s South Shore is one of the more sheltered coastlines on the island, so flat or rough conditions that cancel sessions are less common here than on the North Shore. If conditions do force a cancellation on their end, you’ll typically have the option to reschedule. It’s always worth checking in the evening before your lesson if you’re uncertain, and your booking confirmation through CheapHawaiian.com will include contact details to reach the operator directly.
