Amenities

All surf equipment is provided, including a soft-top longboard sized to your ability level — these wider, more buoyant boards are specifically chosen to give beginners the best chance of actually standing up on their first few waves. You don't need to own or rent anything separately; show up ready to paddle and the instructors handle the rest.
Certified, experienced instructors lead every session, and on Kauai's South Shore that means someone who surfs these exact breaks daily and knows exactly where to position beginners to catch the most consistent whitewater. They'll watch your pop-up form on the beach, correct it before you hit the water, and then follow you into the surf to give real-time guidance — not just wave from the shore.

Special Instruction

Kauai's South Shore — Learn to Surf Together

First Pop-Up on a Koloa Wave

The instructor plants a hand on your board rail, calls the wave, and suddenly the ocean does the work — you feel the lift under your feet and scramble up, arms out, heart hammering. For about three seconds you’re actually surfing, the warm water rushing past your ankles and the green hills of Kauai filling the horizon ahead of you. The group on the beach sees it happen and starts hollering, which somehow makes it feel even better.

Beach Drills Before the Water Gets Real

On the sand, your instructor talks story about ocean safety, demonstrates the pop-up in slow motion, and watches every person in the group practice it until the muscle memory starts to stick. It sounds low-key but this is genuinely where the lesson is won or lost — the people who skip ahead in their heads to ‘the surfing part’ are the same ones who spend the whole session on their knees in the water. Twenty minutes on the beach translates directly into standing on your first real wave.

Reading the South Shore Between Sets

While you’re waiting chest-deep for the next set to roll in, your instructor points toward the horizon and explains what you’re actually looking at — the way a swell lines up differently on the left versus the right, why one wave closes out fast while the next one holds. The ocean stops being a blur of movement and starts making a kind of sense you didn’t expect from a 90-minute lesson. By the time you paddle into your third or fourth wave, you’re watching the water the way your instructor does, and that shift feels like the real thing you’re taking home.

Learn to Surf in Hawaiʻi

If you’re visiting Hawaiʻi, learning to surf is one of those must-do experiences. That first moment you stand up and glide across a wave is something you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Your instructor, Charlie Smith, is a professional surfer and high-level surf coach who has been helping visitors catch their first waves since the 1990s. With years of experience in local waters, he knows how to keep things safe, relaxed, and fun.

How the Lesson Works

The lesson begins on the sand, where Charlie shows you the most important skill in surfing: how to stand correctly on the board. Using soft-top surfboards laid out on the beach, you’ll practice your stance, foot placement, and basic movement in a controlled setting.

Once you’ve got the fundamentals down, it’s time to head into the water. Charlie will lead your small group out to where the waves are breaking, tell you when to start paddling, and cue you when to stand. Throughout the session, he’ll give you clear, simple instructions so you always know what to do next.

Class sizes are intentionally kept small—usually between 4 and 6 students—so everyone gets personal attention and support. If you’re traveling with a larger group, you can reach out in advance (ideally before you arrive on Kauaʻi) so arrangements can be made for everyone to learn together in a safe, well-organized setup.

Whether you’re young, older, nervous, or excited, this lesson is designed to help you feel comfortable in the water and enjoy every moment of the experience.

Hawaii Group Lesson – Fun & Social Learning: Frequently Asked Questions

  • No prior experience is needed — this lesson is specifically designed for beginners and people who’ve never paddled out before. The instructors build the entire 90 minutes around teaching you from scratch, starting with paddling technique and pop-up drills on the beach before you ever enter the water. If you’ve dabbled a little before, you’ll still benefit from the structured coaching.

  • Koloa’s South Shore breaks are consistently smaller and more sheltered than the exposed north-facing coasts of Kauai, which makes them well-suited for beginner lessons. The whitewater waves used in group lessons are typically 1-3 feet — enough to feel real momentum under the board without overwhelming someone on their first session. Summer months tend to be the flattest and most forgiving; winter can see slightly larger south swells but instructors adjust positioning accordingly.

  • Group lessons keep numbers manageable so instructors can actually watch and coach each student rather than just supervise. While exact ratios can vary by date and demand, Blue Seas Surfing School structures these sessions to maintain enough personal attention that you’re not just left to figure it out on your own. If you want guaranteed one-on-one attention, the school also offers private lesson options.

  • Yes, all surf equipment including a soft-top longboard appropriate for your size and skill level is included in the $75 lesson price. You don’t need to arrange anything separately — just show up in your swimwear with reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard. There are no hidden add-on fees for equipment at checkout.

  • Wear a swimsuit you can move in and bring or wear a rash guard — the South Shore sun is intense and wipeouts against the board wax will irritate unprotected skin over 90 minutes. Apply reef-safe mineral sunscreen before you arrive since the Koloa area and most Kauai operators follow Hawaii’s reef protection guidelines. Leave jewelry, electronics, and valuables secured elsewhere because there’s no lockbox service at the beach.

  • This lesson is listed as open to all ages, so keiki are welcome to join alongside adults. Younger children tend to do surprisingly well on soft-top longboards because lower centers of gravity work in their favor. If you’re bringing a young child, it’s worth contacting the school directly before booking to confirm they’re ready for an in-water session and that the conditions on your chosen date are appropriate for small riders.
