Amenities

Surfboard rental is included in your lesson, and these aren't the beat-up foam logs you'd find at a gear shack — instructors match you to a board based on your height and experience level, typically a longer, wider soft-top that gives beginners the stability they need to actually stand up and ride. You show up with your swimsuit and sunscreen; the board is handled.
Rash guards are provided so you don't spend your vacation nursing a raw belly from dragging across the wax. This matters more than people expect — 90 minutes in the water on a beginner board means a lot of paddling and pop-up practice, and without that layer between you and the deck you'll feel it by day two.

Stand Up in Hanalei Bay's Gentle Surf

Your First Real Wave at Hanalei

The instructor gives you a firm push at exactly the right moment — you feel the wave lift the tail of the board, paddle twice hard, and then you’re up, genuinely standing, the whitewater roaring under your feet and the green mountains of Kauai’s North Shore filling your entire field of vision. It takes most people three or four tries, but when it clicks, the whole group on the beach lets out a holler.

Land Drills Before the Water Magic

Before anyone touches the ocean, you’re flat on the sand running through pop-ups until your muscle memory starts to take over — jump, feet land shoulder-width apart, knees bent, eyes forward, arms out. It feels a little silly until you realize this is exactly why the 90-minute format works: you’re not rushed, and by the time you paddle out your body already knows what to do.

Your Instructor Reads the Ocean for You

While you’re sitting on your board waiting in the lineup, your instructor is already watching the horizon, quietly saying ‘this one, get ready’ before you even see the swell forming — and that local knowledge is worth more than any amount of YouTube tutorials. The water at Hanalei is a warm, glassy green up close, and between waves you can hear the instructor joking with the keiki in the group while keeping one eye on every set rolling in. By the end of the session you stop second-guessing and just trust the call, which is when surfing finally starts to feel like something you could actually do again.

90 Minute Group Surf Lessons – Extended Session: FAQs

  • No prior experience is required — this lesson is specifically designed for beginners who have never surfed before. The extended 90-minute format means instructors can take time on the beach to teach proper pop-up technique and board positioning before anyone enters the water, so you’re not just thrown into the ocean and expected to figure it out.

  • Group sizes are kept manageable so instructors can give each person real attention in the water — this isn’t a situation where 20 strangers are paddling around with one distracted instructor on the shore. Exact group size caps can vary by session date, so if you’re particular about a smaller ratio, reach out to confirm before booking.

  • In summer months, Hanalei Bay is one of the calmest, most forgiving places on Kauai to learn — the bay’s shape creates gentle, rolling whitewater that’s ideal for beginners. Winter swells can make the North Shore significantly more powerful, so the school monitors conditions closely and will work with smaller inside waves appropriate for the group’s skill level on any given day.

  • Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and apply reef-safe sunscreen before you arrive — the lesson provides rash guards, so your torso is covered in the water. Bring a towel, a dry change of clothes, and a water bottle; there’s no formal changing facility at the beach so most people change at their accommodation before heading over.

  • The extra 30 minutes sounds small but in practice it’s the difference between catching two or three waves and catching ten — you spend less time rushing through the beach instruction and more time in the water building actual confidence and feel for the break. Most guests who’ve done both formats say the 90-minute session is when things finally start to click rather than feeling like a rushed introduction.

  • The minimum age is 6, and kids genuinely tend to excel in this environment — their lower center of gravity and fearlessness in the water means many of them are standing up before the adults in their group. Instructors are experienced working with young surfers and naturally keep a close eye on keiki in the water throughout the session.
