Amenities

Professional high-performance surfboard selection is provided, matched to your skill level and the day's conditions at Hanalei Bay. Your instructor will choose a board that challenges your progression — not the oversized foam beginner board, but something shaped for speed and response that lets you actually feel what proper technique does.
Personalized one-on-one or small-group coaching is the foundation of every elite session. Rather than generic tips shouted from the beach, your instructor is in the water with you, watching your pop-up mechanics, your weight distribution through a turn, and your line choice in real time — then giving you specific, actionable adjustments between every single wave.

Hanalei Bay Coaching That Actually Changes You

Reading the Set Before It Arrives

Your instructor calls the wave before you even see it, pointing to a horizon line disturbance that looks like nothing to you right now but will look like everything after this session. That moment — when wave reading clicks — is what intermediate surfers describe as the single biggest shift in their surfing, and Hanalei’s consistent bay swells are the perfect classroom for it.

The Cutback You've Been Chasing

Halfway through your session, with the green peaks of the Na Pali coast sitting on the horizon and Hanalei’s mountain ridges wrapped in cloud behind you, you finally thread a backside cutback the way it’s supposed to feel — weight forward, arms quiet, board carving like it’s on a track. That’s the moment every surfer in this program talks about when they get back to their rental that evening.

Paddling Back Out Through Hanalei's Channel

Between sets, your instructor walks you through the paddle-out strategy specific to this bay — using the channel’s calmer water to conserve energy so you arrive in the lineup ready to surf, not gasping. You notice the rhythm of it now: the lull, the positioning, the quiet moment of floating in chest-deep water while the next set stacks on the horizon. That small tactical piece — how to get out efficiently — changes everything about how long you can actually stay in the water and perform.

Activity Details
All surfers must be confident swimmers and comfortable in the ocean.

Your private 60-minute lesson begins on the sand with about 15 minutes of warmup, safety briefing, and surf etiquette. During this time, your instructor will walk you through board basics—positioning, paddling, and how to pop up correctly.

From there, you’ll head down to the beach (transport is provided) and into the water for the main part of your session. With your instructor by your side, you’ll start catching waves, standing up, and riding them in, with clear feedback after each attempt.

A surfboard rental and rash guard are included in the lesson, so all you need to bring is your swimwear, towel, and enthusiasm. If you’d like to surf specifically with Kaʻula, you can email ahead to request him, subject to availability.

60 Minute Elite Surf Lesson – Premium One Hour: Frequently Asked Questions

  • This lesson is specifically designed for intermediate and advanced surfers — you should already be able to stand up, ride a wave, and make basic directional adjustments before booking this session. If you’re a complete beginner or just got your first stand-up in on a foam board last week, this isn’t the right fit and you’d get more value from a foundational lesson first. The elite format assumes your fundamentals exist and builds on them with performance-specific coaching.

  • For surfers who are genuinely trying to level up their technique, yes — the focused one-on-one attention and real-time in-water feedback you get here accelerates improvement in ways a group lesson simply can’t replicate. Group lessons distribute instructor attention across multiple students; this session puts experienced eyes on your specific mechanics for a full sixty minutes. Surfers who’ve taken both consistently say one elite session moves their surfing forward more than several standard group classes.

  • Your instructor will position you based on the day’s conditions, your skill level, and your specific goals for the session — Hanalei Bay offers multiple distinct sections, from the gentler inside bowls to more powerful outside peaks, and the coaches know exactly which zone will give you the wave type you need to practice what you’re working on. Don’t expect to be locked into one spot; part of the coaching is learning to read which section is working and why.

  • The minimum age is 6, and younger surfers who already have foundational skills absolutely get value from this format — Hanalei Bay’s bay conditions can be excellent for developing junior surfers, and the personalized coaching approach works just as well for a determined 10-year-old as it does for an adult. That said, the session is performance-focused, so the child should genuinely have some existing surf experience rather than being brand new to the sport.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen applied before you arrive, a rashguard, water shoes are optional but useful on the reef edges, and a water bottle for after — the physical demand of sixty minutes of intensive surfing in warm water hits you harder than you expect once the adrenaline fades. Boards are provided, so leave your own equipment behind unless your instructor specifically tells you otherwise. Bring a small dry bag or leave valuables locked in your car at the Hanalei Bay access area.

  • Booking ahead by at least a few days is strongly recommended, particularly during summer months when Hanalei Bay conditions draw high surf demand and available coaching slots fill quickly. Cancellation and rescheduling policies are managed through the FareHarbor booking system — review the specific terms at the time of booking, as policies can vary. Ocean activities at Hanalei are occasionally weather or swell-dependent, so your operator may reschedule if conditions aren’t appropriate for the session.
