Experience the Beauty of Kīlauea Iki
About
Duration: 4.5-hour guided hike
Capacity: Up to 8 people (please call for pricing for additional guests)
Set out on a 7.24 km / 4.5-mile moderate hike through Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, beginning at the Devastation Trail parking area. Your adventure opens with sweeping views of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, where your guide will point out features shaped by recent and historic eruptions.
From there, you’ll descend toward Kīlauea Iki Crater and walk across its solidified lava lake, created during the dramatic 1959 eruption. Cracks, textures, and color variations in the rock offer a striking reminder of when this entire basin glowed with molten lava.
The journey continues into Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), where you’ll step inside a tunnel carved by flowing lava long ago. As you move between open crater views, native forest, and cooled lava flows, your guide will share stories about the volcano’s past, the forces still shaping the island, and the plants and wildlife that have returned to this once-scorched landscape.
This hike is ideal for nature lovers and curious explorers who want more than just a quick overlook stop. Expect an immersive, on-foot experience that reveals the raw beauty of Kīlauea Iki and the powerful geology that defines Hawaiʻi’s unique volcanic environment.
