Fat Tire E-Bike Tour – Kalapana Beach Road & Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park
Age 15+ • Minimum 2 Guests • Maximum 14 Guests
Ride powerful fat tire electric bikes along one of the most scenic coastal roads on the Big Island before exploring the dramatic landscapes of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park—all in one unforgettable day.
Fat tire e-bikes make this tour accessible and exciting. They are strong, stable, and surprisingly easy to handle, even if you’ve never been on an e-bike before. The electric assist lets you cover long distances with minimal effort, so you can focus on the views instead of the climb. You stay in control the entire time, cruising smoothly along roads and trails while enjoying the ocean breeze and volcanic scenery. This is the kind of adventure that stays with you for years.
We begin by meeting at the HNF Gas Station in Keaau, then drive about 35 minutes to Kalapana Beach Road. From there, your guided e-bike tour of Kalapana and the 2018 lava flow area begins. Along the way you will:
Ride past dramatic cliffside coastline
See rugged lava arches carved by the ocean
Glide through lush tree tunnels
Visit the newest black sand beach on the Big Island, created by the 2018 eruption
After exploring Kalapana, we head up to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
Inside the national park, you’ll have free time to purchase and enjoy lunch at one of the few on-site restaurants (lunch is not included in the tour price). Once we’re back on the fat tire e-bikes, the real advantage of riding begins—no circling for parking, no long walks between viewpoints. We move efficiently through the park and cover more ground than most visitors can on foot or by car.
During the Volcanoes National Park portion of the tour, we typically visit:
Famous viewpoints and top-rated park stops
Lava tubes
Steam vents
And, when conditions allow, viewpoints where you may see an active lava lake or current lava activity
Because of the terrain and distance covered, this experience is best suited for confident riders. We require that all participants be at least intermediate-level bicyclists and comfortable riding a standard 26″ two-wheeled bike.
Please note: if you are unable to safely ride a 26″ two-wheeled bicycle, this does not qualify for a refund. This is a true bike tour, and basic riding ability is essential for your safety and enjoyment.
