Tour Highlights
Waimea and the Hamakua Coast
The tour begins as we cruise along Highway 19, passing through the historic town of Waimea. You’ll admire vast cattle ranches that are deeply intertwined with the island’s history. Continuing, we’ll travel along the eastern flank of Mauna Kea, known for the breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Here, thousands of years of erosion have carved deep valleys and steep cliffs, providing some of the island’s most spectacular scenery.
Laupahoehoe
Stop at Laupahoehoe, where you’ll see the powerful Pacific Ocean’s ability to shape the coastline, creating dramatic rugged pinnacles. This is a perfect opportunity for a stunning photo of Hawaii’s dynamic coastline.
Akaka Falls
Next, we’ll head to Akaka Falls, a breathtaking 442-foot waterfall that plunges into the Kolekole Gulch below. Surrounded by lush rainforest, this majestic waterfall is one of the island’s natural treasures.
Lunch at Hilo Sharks in Honomu
After exploring the falls, we’ll stop at Hilo Sharks in Honomu for fresh, local wraps. Enjoy a delicious and satisfying lunch before continuing your adventure.
Hamakua Coast Scenic Roads
Following lunch, we’ll take a scenic drive along some of the island’s most beautiful backroads, winding through lush jungle gorges and past epic ocean vistas. This stretch of road offers some of the best views of the coast and is perfect for soaking in the island’s natural beauty.
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park
No Big Island adventure is complete without visiting Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Here, you’ll stand at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano, gazing into its vast summit caldera. Kīlauea is relatively young at only 500 years old, and you’ll learn about its dynamic geology. As we travel along Chain of Craters Road, you’ll witness ancient lava flows, scorched earth, pit craters, and steaming ground—all part of Kīlauea’s ongoing eruption cycle. Take time to explore and understand the volcanic processes that shape this unique environment.
Saddle Road and Return to the West Side
To cap off your day, we’ll drive along Saddle Road, which leads back to the island’s west side. As we ascend to nearly 6,800 feet, you’ll pass through a variety of microclimates, including lush rainforests, cloud forests, high deserts, and vast prairies. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two of the tallest volcanoes on the planet.
This tour offers a comprehensive look at the island’s natural wonders, from lush jungles to volcanic craters, providing an unforgettable experience of the Big Island.
