Tour Highlights
Waimea & Hamakua Coast
The journey begins as we cruise along Highway 19, passing through the historic town of Waimea. Here, you’ll see vast cattle ranches that are deeply significant to the island’s heritage. From Waimea, we’ll travel along the eastern flank of Mauna Kea—the towering volcano that defines the Hamakua Coast. The coast is known for its dramatic valleys and steep cliffs, shaped by thousands of years of erosion.
Laupahoehoe
We’ll make a stop at Laupahoehoe, where you can marvel at the rugged pinnacles formed by the Pacific Ocean’s relentless force. This coastal view offers a striking visual of nature’s power to shape the landscape.
Akaka Falls
Next, we’ll head toward Akaka Falls, a stunning 442-foot waterfall that plunges into the Kolekole Gulch. Surrounded by dense rainforest, this picturesque spot is one of the island’s most popular natural attractions.
Hilo Sharks & Scenic Backroads
After enjoying the falls, we’ll stop at Hilo Sharks in Honomu to try some fresh, local wraps. Following lunch, we’ll continue our journey along some of the island’s most scenic backroads. Winding through lush jungle gorges and past breathtaking ocean vistas, these roads offer incredible views of the Big Island’s diverse landscapes.
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park
No trip to the Big Island is complete without visiting Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Here, you’ll visit the summit of Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. Take in the panoramic views of the Kīlauea caldera, a 500-year-old volcano. Along Chain of Craters Road, you’ll encounter pit craters, scorched earth, steaming ground, and both old and new lava flows. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the dynamic forces that continue to shape the island’s volcanic landscape.
Saddle Road & Return to the West Side
To finish off the adventure, we’ll travel Saddle Road back to the island’s west side. Reaching an elevation of nearly 6,800 feet, we’ll pass through a variety of microclimates, from lush rainforests and cloud forests to high deserts and vast prairies. Along the way, you’ll have stunning views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two of the largest volcanoes in the world.
This thrilling adventure is the perfect way to explore the Big Island’s volcanic landscape, lush rainforests, and dramatic coastline.
