Overview
Experience the Big Island on your own schedule with a 24-hour self-guided volcano road adventure, starting and ending in Kailua-Kona. Your route begins at the base of Hualālai—Hawaiʻi’s third-highest and one of its most active volcanoes—before sweeping south around the island beneath the massive slopes of Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on Earth.
Along the way, you can stop for a swim or photo break at Papakōlea Green Sand Beach and/or Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, two of the island’s most unique shorelines. From there, continue into Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, 323,000 acres of dramatic lava fields, craters, and rainforest, and home to Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Highlights inside the park can include steam vents, Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), and exhibits at the Jaggar Museum area, plus viewpoints looking toward Halemaʻumaʻu Crater.
You can return to Kailua-Kona the same way you came or cross the island via Saddle Road, climbing to over 6,600 feet between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, your fourth volcano of the day. This full-day loop showcases the best of the Big Island’s volcanic scenery, coastlines, and climate zones in one unforgettable drive.
