Itinerary

Sharks Cove:
Sharks Cove is part of the Pupukea Beach Park on Oahu’s North Shore, nestled between Sunset Beach and Haleiwa. It’s a fantastic spot for snorkeling with its rocky entry point and abundant marine life. If you’re new to snorkeling, we’ll guide you to the best entry point. For those who prefer easier access, Three Tables may be a better choice. At Sharks Cove, you’ll find fish, sea urchins, and the chance to spot sea turtles and stingrays. This location is great for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.

Pupukea Tide Pools:
For those who prefer shallow waters, the Pupukea Tide Pools on the south side of Sharks Cove offer a perfect wading spot. This is ideal for families with small children or anyone who is hesitant about deep water. It’s a relaxing place to explore, with beautiful rock formations and a range of marine life.

Three Tables:
Just a short walk from Sharks Cove, Three Tables Beach is a fantastic snorkeling spot, especially for beginners. With a sandy entry, it’s easy to get into the water and enjoy snorkeling without the challenge of big waves. The area is known for its live coral and frequent sea turtle sightings around the “table” rock formations.

South Side of Waimea Bay:
For a change of scenery, head to the south side of Waimea Bay, just a quarter-mile walk from Three Tables. Known for its snorkeling opportunities, this area features large basalt boulders and patches of coral reef. You’ll find plenty of fish moving with the tide, making it an exciting place for underwater exploration.

Sharks Cove Snorkeling Information

  • Despite its intimidating name, Sharks Cove is actually named for the rock formations that resemble shark fins, not because of shark populations. This is one of Oahu’s safest snorkeling locations with extremely rare shark encounters. The name comes from the distinctive lava rock shapes visible from the surface.

  • Entry is from a rocky shoreline that requires careful navigation over lava rocks. The entry can be challenging for inexperienced snorkelers, especially during high surf conditions. We recommend reef-safe shoes and taking time to assess conditions before entering the water.

  • Sharks Cove hosts incredible biodiversity including Hawaiian green sea turtles, moorish idols, yellow tangs, parrotfish, butterflyfish, eels, octopus, and various coral species. The protected status ensures healthy populations of both common and rare tropical species.

  • Basic facilities include parking areas and nearby food trucks, but no restrooms or changing facilities directly at the cove. The closest amenities are at nearby Waimea Bay. Plan accordingly and bring necessary supplies for your snorkeling adventure.

  • Early morning typically offers the calmest conditions and best visibility. Summer months generally provide more favorable ocean conditions, while winter can bring larger surf that makes entry dangerous. Always check current ocean conditions and weather before your visit.
