Amenities

Round-trip hotel transportation is included in this package, meaning a comfortable shuttle picks you up at your Kauai hotel and returns you safely at the end of the night. This matters more than it sounds — Kilohana Plantation is a few miles outside central Lihue, and the road back after dark and a few cocktails is not where you want to be guessing directions on your rental car GPS.
The historic plantation train ride is a genuine working sugarcane-era train that circles the Kilohana estate before the luau program begins, narrated with stories about Kauai's plantation days. It runs slowly enough that you can hear the wheels on the rails, feel the warm evening air, and watch the estate's sprawling gardens pass by — it's the kind of slow-down moment that actually makes you exhale after a busy day of sightseeing.

Special Instruction

Train, Fire, and Kalua Pork at Kilohana

Cane Train at Dusk, Kilohana Plantation

As the old plantation train pulls away from the Kilohana station, the estate’s mango and monkeypod trees close overhead and the last of the golden hour light cuts through the canopy in long slanted beams. The car rocks gently, somebody in the row ahead of you laughs at something the narrator says, and for a few minutes Kauai feels exactly like it did a hundred years ago.

The Moment the Fire Dancers Take the Stage

When the torches ignite for the main production at Luau Kalamaku, the heat from the flames is close enough that you feel it on your cheeks from the front rows. The show tells an actual Hawaiian story through movement and chant, and the fire poi segment draws a collective held breath from the crowd — then an eruption of applause that you can feel in your chest.

Haupia, Open Bar, and the Long Hawaiian Buffet Line

The buffet spread at Luau Kalamaku moves at its own unhurried pace — kalua pig pulled straight from the imu, poi that actually tastes like taro rather than wallpaper paste, and a coconut haupia that cuts clean and cold at the end of the meal. The open bar means your mai tai gets refilled before you even think to ask, and the whole thing unfolds under open sky with the warm Lihue air settling around the tables as the stars start to show.

About the Luau
THE SHOW
While most luaus offer traditional Hawaiian food, music, and hula dancing, Luau Kalamaku offers something truly unique. The show transports you back to ancient Polynesia, where epic voyages between Hawaii and Tahiti unfold along one of the longest sea roads in Polynesia. The performance weaves together laughter, fear, seduction, and fire to create a new legacy rooted in the island’s ancestral traditions.

The show culminates with an exhilarating fire dream, featuring fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing. The grand finale brings to life Kauai’s rich mythology with figures like Pele, the fire goddess, her sister Hiiaka, Lohiau the prince of Kauai, and the fire-breathing Moo-dragon women.

This isn’t just a performance—it’s a story you are part of. Celebrate Kauai’s primal rhythm as the family embarks on a journey seeking the courage and vision to carry them beyond the horizon.

Luau Kalamaku Kauai Silver Package — Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Silver Package is the mid-tier option at Luau Kalamaku, offering solid seating, full buffet access, and open bar — the core luau experience without the premium table positioning or specialty upgrades of higher tiers. Higher packages typically include closer seats to the stage, reserved table service, or additional menu items; the Silver Package gives most guests everything they actually want at a price point that makes sense for families or groups.

  • The plantation train ride happens earlier in the evening, typically before the main buffet and show begin, as part of the arrival and grounds-exploration portion of the night. It’s a narrated loop around the Kilohana estate and runs about 20-30 minutes — think of it as the warm-up act that sets the plantation atmosphere before the cultural program starts.

  • Transportation covers hotels in the main visitor corridors of Kauai, including Poipu, Koloa, Lihue, Kapaa, and Wailua areas — the majority of where guests stay on the island. If you’re in a vacation rental or a less-central location like Princeville or Hanalei, it’s worth confirming at the time of booking whether your specific address falls on the pickup route, since the shuttle runs a fixed circuit.

  • The food at Kalamaku consistently draws genuine compliments from guests, not just polite ones — the kalua pork is slow-roasted in the imu and tastes noticeably smoky and tender in a way that hotel luau buffets often don’t pull off. The spread includes traditional Hawaiian staples like lomi salmon, poi, chicken long rice, and haupia alongside more approachable dishes for guests who are newer to Hawaiian cuisine, so there’s plenty on the table regardless of how adventurous your palate is.

  • Yes, Luau Kalamaku is genuinely family-friendly and well set up for keiki of all ages, including toddlers. The open grounds give little ones room to move, the train ride is a big hit with younger kids, and the show’s fire and hula performances are visually engaging enough to hold their attention without being scary. Check current pricing at booking since children’s rates typically differ from adult pricing.

  • There’s no strict dress code, but aloha casual is the right call — aloha shirts, sundresses, linen pants, and comfortable sandals are all appropriate and common. The evening is spent partly outdoors on plantation grounds, so closed-toe shoes aren’t necessary but you’ll want something with a back strap rather than flip-flops if you want to feel steady on the gravel paths near the train platform.
