Paddle & Pedal Kailua

Kailua is a stunning beach town on Oahu, and this 3-hour combo tour showcases it from two unique perspectives — on the water and on an e-bike. Begin by kayaking from Kailua Beach to Popoia Island, a beautiful seabird sanctuary in the turquoise bay. Then, ride an e-bike along the scenic streets, feeling the warm sun and fragrant plumeria.

Amenities

All kayaking equipment is provided — sit-on-top kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation devices are included in your tour price and sized to fit you before launch. You won't need to haul anything to the beach or figure out gear rental on your own; your guide handles setup so you're in the water faster.
Electric bikes are provided for the cycling portion of the tour, complete with helmets and a quick orientation on how the pedal-assist system works before you roll out. The e-bikes are well-maintained and the assist levels are adjustable, so if you want to feel the burn you can, and if you just want to cruise and talk story with your guide, that's totally valid too.

Paddle Flat Island, Pedal Kailua Town

Crossing the Bay to Popoia Island

The paddle from Kailua Beach to Popoia Island is only about a mile, but the color of the water changes three times before you get there — from pale green near shore to a deep glassy teal out in the bay. When you pull up to the island and step out, the sound hits you first: red-footed boobies and frigate birds nesting overhead, completely unbothered by your arrival.

E-Biking the Windward Side

Once you’re back on land and dried off, the e-bikes take you through Kailua’s residential streets and along the coast with the Koolau Range filling the entire mauka skyline. At the right time of morning the light comes through the pali in long golden shafts, and your guide knows exactly where to stop so you can take it all in without getting clipped by traffic.

What the Guide Knows That the Guidebooks Don't

Between the kayak and the e-bike, your guide fills in the gaps — pointing out which reef sections the green sea turtles favor, why the water off Popoia runs so clear compared to the rest of the bay, and the kind of local context that turns a pretty morning into something you actually understand. The three hours go fast, and the half-day format is calibrated just right: enough to feel like you did something real, not so long that you’re dragging yourself back to the car.

Popoia Island Kayak & E-Bike Tour — Frequently Asked Questions

  • No prior kayaking experience is required — your guide will walk you through paddle technique and water safety before you launch. Kailua Bay is generally calm and protected, which makes it a good spot for first-timers, though wind and chop can pick up depending on the day, so expect a real workout on the return paddle if conditions are active.

  • The e-bike leg is genuinely manageable for most fitness levels because the pedal-assist system does the heavy lifting on any inclines. The terrain around Kailua is relatively flat, and you can dial the assist up so you’re essentially just steering and enjoying the scenery — it’s not a workout unless you want it to be.

  • Popoia Island (Flat Island) is a state seabird sanctuary, so access to the island itself is limited and your guide will brief you on what’s allowed during your visit. The water around the island is beautiful and the swim conditions on a calm day are excellent, but follow your guide’s direction — the nesting birds and protected status mean there are real rules in play, not just suggestions.

  • Wear a swimsuit or board shorts under quick-dry clothes, and bring water shoes or closed-toe sandals that work for both kayaking and biking. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses with a strap or croakie, and your phone in a waterproof pouch or zip-lock — there’s no dry storage on the kayak and you will get splashed.

  • The 16+ age minimum is a hard requirement set by the tour operator, not a suggestion. That said, physically capable 16 and 17-year-olds tend to handle this tour well — the kayak paddle is the most demanding part, and a fit teenager will likely outpace the adults on the e-bike stretch.

  • The tour departs from the Kailua area, and your exact meeting point and parking details will be confirmed when you complete your booking. Kailua Beach Park has public parking nearby, but it fills up fast on weekends and holidays, so arriving 15-20 minutes early is a smart move — showing up stressed and late to a kayak launch is not a great way to start the morning.
