Amenities

Snorkel gear is provided on board, including mask, snorkel, and fins fitted to your size before you hit the water. This matters more than it sounds — ill-fitting gear is the number-one reason people have a bad snorkel experience, and the crew takes a few minutes to make sure you're set up properly before anyone splashes in.
Professional marine guides accompany you in the water throughout the snorkel portion, not just watching from the boat. They know exactly where the turtles tend to congregate on a given day, and they'll position you correctly so you're observing without disturbing the honu — which keeps the encounter natural and keeps everyone on the right side of federal marine protection guidelines.

Special Instruction

Honu Waiting Just Below the Surface

Eye-Level With a Green Sea Turtle

You drop below the surface and a honu the size of a coffee table is just hovering there, completely unbothered, close enough that you can see the individual scutes on its shell and the slow, deliberate blink of one ancient eye. The guide signals you to hold your position and you both just float there in that warm, impossibly blue water, breathing slow through your snorkel, the only sound a faint hum of the ocean around you.

Catamaran Deck Before the Dive

The catamaran settles and cuts its engine over the reef, and for a second the whole group goes quiet — you can hear the water against the hull and feel the gentle roll under your feet as everyone looks over the side at the coral below. Then someone spots the first dark oval shape gliding through the blue and the energy on deck shifts completely, from relaxed to electric, before the first person rolls backward into the water.

When the Guide Points Down and Nobody Moves

Your marine guide taps their tank twice — the signal — and points toward a patch of reef maybe fifteen feet below where two honu are grazing on algae like they’ve got absolutely nowhere to be. You hang there at the surface in your fins, salt water lapping at your ears above the waterline, watching them graze in slow motion until one peels off the reef and spirals upward past your mask on its way to the surface for air, close enough that its flipper cuts a tiny wake you can feel against your arm.

Oahu Turtle Snorkel Cruise – Semi-Private Catamaran: Frequently Asked Questions

  • No operator can legally guarantee a wildlife sighting, but this tour targets the specific reef cleaning stations along Oahu’s south shore where honu are seen with very high frequency — these aren’t random ocean coordinates, they’re known turtle aggregation sites. In 20 years of watching tours run out of this area, I can tell you the guides know exactly where to look and they track the turtles’ patterns closely. Most groups do see turtles, often multiple individuals, and the marine guides are in the water with you to help position the group for the best encounter.

  • The semi-private format keeps the group significantly smaller than the big commercial snorkel catamarans that pack 40 to 60 people on deck. Exact maximum capacity isn’t published, but the intent of the semi-private structure is a genuinely small group experience — close enough that your guide can work with each guest in the water rather than just managing crowd flow. If you want the boat entirely to yourself, the private charter options on CheapHawaiian.com cover that, but most guests find the semi-private size more than comfortable.

  • Wear your swimsuit under your clothes so you’re ready to gear up quickly once you’re briefed on board. Bring reef-safe mineral sunscreen — conventional chemical sunscreens are damaging to coral and the crew will ask you to use compliant products. A light layer or rash guard for the ride back is smart, a dry bag for your phone is smarter, and water shoes are optional since you’re boarding from a dock rather than a beach entry.

  • The tour is rated for ages 5 and up, and the south shore snorkel sites are generally calm, protected water rather than open-surf conditions. That said, participants do need to be comfortable in open water — this isn’t a pool and there’s no shallow end to stand in. Kids who are confident swimmers with a little snorkel experience do great here; the guides are attentive in the water and life jackets or flotation devices are available for those who want extra support.

  • The snorkel sites are along Oahu’s south shore, relatively close to the coastline and generally in calmer, leeward water rather than exposed open ocean. The catamaran hull is stable and the ride is smooth for most people most of the time. If you have any history of motion sickness on boats — even mild — take an over-the-counter remedy like Bonine or Dramamine at least an hour before departure. Rough days do happen occasionally in Hawaii and there’s no refund for getting queasy, so better to be prepared.

  • The departure location is in Honolulu, HI — specific dock and meeting point details are confirmed in your booking confirmation after you reserve your spot. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time to check in, get fitted for snorkel gear, and hear the safety briefing. Parking near the departure area in Honolulu can be tight, so factor in extra time if you’re driving from Waikiki or elsewhere on the island.
