Amenities

All kayaking equipment is provided, including stable sit-on-top ocean kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation devices fitted before launch. This means you show up to Makena Landing with nothing but sunscreen on your skin and reef-safe at that — and the guides handle all the gear setup so you're not fumbling with equipment when a whale surfaces 50 yards off your bow.
A knowledgeable naturalist guide leads every tour, narrating whale behavior in real time and explaining what you're actually seeing — whether it's a breach, a pec slap, or a mother-calf pair logging at the surface. These aren't scripted spiels; guides answer questions mid-paddle and often share the kind of specific behavioral context — 'that male is escorting, watch him — that you'd never get from a boat tour PA system.

Eye Level With Humpbacks Off Makena

The Moment a Whale Exhales Beside Your Kayak

You hear it before you see it — a loud, wet rush of air that sounds almost industrial, and then the massive grey arch of a humpback’s back rolls through the water maybe 30 feet off your bow. Your paddle stops mid-stroke. Everything goes quiet except the wind and your own heartbeat.

Makena Landing at Dawn, Before the Crowds Arrive

Makena Landing in the early morning has a stillness to it that disappears by midday — the water is glassy, the light is low and golden, and the volcanic coastline of Pu’u Ōla’i rises sharply behind you as you push off. By the time most visitors are finishing breakfast at their hotel, you’re already a quarter mile offshore watching a calf breach for what might be the tenth time this morning.

When a Calf Decides Your Kayak Is Worth Investigating

Calves are relentlessly curious — and occasionally one will veer away from its mother and slide toward your hull, close enough that you can see the barnacle-free smoothness of its skin and the slow sweep of its fluke just beneath the surface. Your guide will tell you to hold your paddle still and just sit with it, which is harder than it sounds when something the size of a pickup truck is making direct eye contact. The mother surfaces nearby and waits, unhurried, and for a few seconds the three of you are just sharing the same patch of ocean off Makena.

Seasonal Whale Watching from December to March

Each winter, the Humpback Whales make an incredible journey from the icy waters of Alaska to the warm shores of Hawaii. During this time, you have the rare chance to enjoy a front-row seat to their annual migration. Our tour runs from December 26th to March 31st, offering daily departures from Makena or Olowalu. If you’re looking to join us outside of these dates, simply reach out, and we’ll try to accommodate you!

A Thrilling 3-Hour Whale Watching and Snorkeling Tour

This is not your typical whale watching experience. With a longer tour and more paddling distance than most others, our whale watching kayak excursion is designed for adventurers aged 5 and older. Starting at 7:00 AM and finishing around 10:15 AM, we’ll spend roughly 3 hours exploring the bay, seeking out Humpback Whales, and soaking in the beauty of Hawaii’s waters. The intimate setting ensures a more private and personal experience compared to crowded boat tours.

Expert Guides for an Unmatched Experience

When it comes to whale watching, experience truly matters. Our full-time guides are masters at navigating the waters and understanding the behavior of Humpback Whales. They’ll take you closer to the action than any other tour could, ensuring you have a safe and unforgettable encounter. Unlike other tours, our guides will also jump into the water with you, helping you spot marine life, providing all necessary gear, and sharing fascinating stories about Hawaiian history and mythology.

Eco-Friendly Whale Watching – A Sustainable Adventure

Why choose a noisy, gas-guzzling boat tour when you can explore Hawaii’s whales in a much more eco-friendly way? Our kayaks are completely emissions-free, giving you the opportunity to witness nature without disturbing the marine life or their environment. Plus, our kayaks allow us to reach hidden spots that larger boats can’t access, ensuring you get a truly unique experience.

Makena Kayak Whale Watch — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Federal law requires maintaining a minimum distance of 100 yards from humpback whales, but guides position the group strategically and — critically — whales sometimes approach the kayaks on their own, which is entirely legal and happens more often than you’d expect. Guests regularly report encounters well within 50 yards when a curious whale closes the distance. The low profile of a kayak makes these moments feel far more intimate than any boat encounter at the same distance.

  • No prior experience is needed — the guides spend a few minutes on paddle technique and safety before launching, and the stable sit-on-top kayaks used on this tour are genuinely beginner-friendly. That said, you should be comfortable in the ocean and reasonably fit; paddling for three hours with occasional current and light chop is not strenuous for most adults, but it’s also not a float on a lazy river. Kids as young as 5 can participate, typically riding tandem with a parent.

  • Humpback whales are present in Hawaiian waters roughly mid-December through mid-April, with peak whale density typically in February and early March. This tour only operates during that window — there are no whales to watch in summer, and no responsible operator will advertise otherwise. If your trip falls outside those months, this specific experience isn’t available, and you’d be looking at a different type of kayak tour instead.

  • The minimum age is 5, and in practice most families with kids 7 and up have a genuinely great time — the whale sightings hold children’s attention in a way that surprises a lot of parents. Younger keiki who meet the age requirement usually paddle tandem with an adult, which keeps them secure and lets a stronger paddler control direction. Guides are experienced with mixed-age groups and good at keeping the pace manageable for families.

  • Wear your bathing suit as a base layer under lightweight quick-dry shorts and a rash guard or UV shirt — you will get wet, either from splash or from the paddle drip, and a rash guard protects against both sun and chafe. Apply reef-safe sunscreen before you arrive since you’ll be in full South Maui sun for three hours with no shade. Leave valuables in the car and bring your phone only in a waterproof case or a Ziploc bag; water shoes or old sneakers are far better than slippers for the rocky entry at Makena Landing.

  • Tours can be cancelled or rescheduled due to unsafe ocean conditions — the operator makes that call based on actual conditions, not a forecast, and will contact you in advance when possible. On the question of whale sightings: while humpback encounters are extremely common during peak season in these waters, no tour can legally or honestly guarantee a sighting, and the operator’s cancellation policy for no-show whales will be outlined at booking. In practice, the vast majority of guests during February and March see multiple whales — but book during peak season if a sighting matters most to you.
