Tour Overview
Discover the beauty of Maui like never before with Maui Sunriders’ Self-Guided Haleakala Downhill Bike Tour. This experience combines breathtaking views, a laid-back itinerary, and the thrill of descending one of the world’s largest dormant volcanoes. With the route designed to be nearly all downhill, this tour is suitable for confident and experienced cyclists looking for a memorable adventure.
Your day begins at our bike shop in the relaxed surf town of Paia, located on Maui’s scenic north shore. Check-in by 8:45 AM, where we’ll fit you with your safety gear and bike, followed by a detailed safety briefing. Then, enjoy a guided van ride up the mountainside — the same route you’ll soon be biking down. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating facts about Haleakala, local culture, and hidden gems to explore.
Ride Highlights
The ride begins just outside the entrance to Haleakala National Park at 6,500 feet. This section, known for its panoramic views and winding switchbacks, is the highlight for most riders. In fact, we let you enjoy it twice — that’s right, you’ll bike the most scenic portion of the route two times before we shuttle you to your next stop.
After the downhill ride, guests are driven to Makawao, a charming upcountry town where you can stroll, shop, and grab a bite to eat. The final shuttle returns all riders to downtown Paia, completing the full loop of mountain to sea.
