Amenities

Snorkel gear is provided for all guests aboard the Nova, including masks, fins, and flotation aids for anyone who wants extra support in the water. This matters more than it sounds — you won't be fighting a cheap rental mask that leaks or fins that blister your heels halfway through the first site.
Food and beverages are included throughout the day, typically featuring a deli-style lunch, snacks, and a selection of drinks including beer and wine for adults. After two snorkel sessions and a channel crossing, eating lunch on deck with Lana'i cliffs in the background is one of those details guests consistently bring up when they recommend this trip.

Lana'i's Reefs From a Proper Sailboat

Dropping In Off Lana'i's Coastline

The crew cuts the engine, the anchor chain rattles down, and suddenly the only sound is water. You roll backward off the rail into 72-degree ocean, look down, and the bottom is just there — coral heads, yellow tangs, a green sea turtle moving slow as a cloud. It takes about 30 seconds to forget everything else.

The Channel Run Back to Maui

On the return sail, the wind is usually behind you and the Nova picks up speed in a way that feels nothing like a motorboat — quiet except for the hull cutting water and the occasional snap of the rigging. Guests tend to go quiet too, sitting up on the bow or stretched out on deck, sunburned and satisfied, watching Haleakalā come back into focus on the horizon.

Lunch Anchored in the Blue

Somewhere off Lana’i, with no dock in sight and the mainsail down, the crew sets out food on the cockpit table — sandwiches, fruit, cold drinks — and the whole boat just stops being a boat and becomes somewhere you actually want to stay. The water is that deep, open-ocean blue that doesn’t exist near shore, and you’re floating in it, eating, salt still drying on your arms. It’s the kind of lunch that makes everything back on land feel slightly less real.

About the Adventure
Join us for an unforgettable full-day sailing experience! We start by discussing your preferences for the day’s journey, tailoring the adventure to your desires, the weather, and wildlife sightings. Sail with us around the stunning Maalaea Bay and beyond, visiting picturesque snorkel spots such as the majestic Pali cliffs in West Maui, the satellite reefs off north Kihei, or even a sunken pier near Lahaina.

Whether you want hands-on sailing instruction or prefer to sit back, relax, and sip on a refreshing cocktail, our experienced captain and crew will ensure your day is effortless and enjoyable. Feel like trying your luck at fishing? We’ll set up trolling lures behind the boat and hope for a big catch!

Our full-day sail is especially popular during whale season, where you won’t have to choose between sailing, snorkeling, or whale watching. And in the summer months, we embrace the windy season for an even more thrilling Ma’alaea adventure.

For groups of 7-12 guests, we offer a unique buddy boat sail where you and your friends set sail side-by-side for a one-of-a-kind sunset experience.

Full Day Snorkel & Sail Maui — Frequently Asked Questions

  • The biggest difference is the destination and the vessel type. Most shorter Maui snorkel trips run 2-3 hours to Molokini Crater on catamarans with 100+ passengers. This full-day trip on the monohull Nova crosses the channel to Lana’i, which means longer time in less-trafficked water and a genuine sailing experience rather than a motor-assisted cruise. Seven hours gives the crew time to hit multiple snorkel sites and let guests actually settle into the day rather than rushing back to the harbor.

  • The ‘Au’au Channel between Maui and Lana’i can be choppy, especially in the morning when trade winds are building — swells of 2 to 4 feet are common, and some days run bigger. If you’ve never been on open ocean, take motion sickness precautions before you board. The good news is the crossing usually smooths out once you reach Lana’i’s leeward coast, and most guests who prepare properly have no issues.

  • You don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable in open water. The crew provides flotation aids and can assist less confident swimmers, and the snorkel sites on Lana’i’s sheltered coast are generally calm compared to exposed reef areas. That said, this is the open ocean — there’s no pool wall to grab. Guests who are genuinely nervous about swimming should discuss comfort level with the operator before booking.

  • Spinner dolphin sightings in the channel are common but not guaranteed — pods frequently travel the Maui-Lana’i crossing and sometimes approach the boat or swim alongside. Green sea turtles are regularly spotted at the snorkel sites along Lana’i’s coast, and humpback whale sightings are possible November through April. Wildlife doesn’t perform on schedule, but this route has one of the better track records on Maui for natural encounters.

  • The Nova departs from Maalaea Harbor, which sits at the intersection of North Kihei Road and Honoapiilani Highway on Maui’s south-central coast. Paid public parking is available at the harbor — arrive at least 20 minutes early so you’re not rushing to find a spot and check in. The harbor has restrooms and a small shopping area if you need to grab anything last minute before boarding.

  • Pack a swimsuit worn under your clothes, a rash guard or light jacket for the morning crossing, reef-safe sunscreen (required in Hawaii waters), a towel, and any personal medications including motion sickness remedies. Leave valuables at the hotel — there’s limited secure storage on a sailing vessel. Reef-safe sunscreen is not just courtesy here, it’s Hawaiian state law, so bring the right kind or pick some up at the harbor before you depart.
