Amenities

Snorkel gear is provided for all guests, including masks, fins, and flotation devices for those who want extra support in the water. This means you don't need to haul your own equipment to the harbor or worry about mask fit — the crew helps dial everything in before you hit the water, which makes a real difference for first-time snorkelers who've never cleared a mask before.
The vessel is equipped with a shaded seating area so you can get out of the sun between snorkel stops without baking on an open deck. On a north shore Kauai morning, the trade winds keep things comfortable, but having shade available during the 20-minute transits between sites is genuinely appreciated — especially for guests with keiki or anyone sensitive to direct sun.

Special Instruction

Na Pali From Underneath, Not Above

First Turtle Sighting at the Reef

You’re hovering above a coral head, watching a parrotfish pick at the reef, and then — without any warning — a Hawaiian green sea turtle the size of a coffee table glides out of the blue and passes within arm’s reach. Most guests report this as the moment the trip locked itself into memory, not a dramatic event, just a quiet, enormous animal moving through its world with complete indifference to yours.

The Cliffs as the Boat Rounds the Point

Rounding the first Na Pali headland from the water gives you a perspective that no hiking trail or helicopter can replicate — you’re small, the cliffs are impossibly tall, and the waterfalls dropping straight into the ocean look like something a painter made up. The salt spray hits your face as the boat picks up speed, the engine noise drops to a hum, and for a few seconds everybody onboard is just staring up with their mouths open.

Pulling Off the Fins Back on the Boat

When the guide finally calls everyone out of the water at the last snorkel stop, you haul yourself up the ladder with tired arms and salt on your lips, and somebody hands you a cold bottle of water that tastes like the best thing you’ve ever had. People are peeling off wetsuits and trading the exact same look — the slightly dazed, salt-drunk grin of someone who just spent an hour in a world that doesn’t belong to them. The ride back toward Hanalei feels quieter than the ride out, not because anything went wrong, but because everyone is still somewhere else in their head.

Na Pali Snorkel Adventure — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes — this tour works well for first-time snorkelers because guides are in the water with you and gear is provided and fitted on-site. The crew will walk you through mask clearing and basic breathing before the first water entry, and flotation devices are available so you’re not fighting to stay at the surface while trying to look down at the reef. If you’re nervous about the open ocean, let the crew know at check-in; they’re used to working with all experience levels and won’t leave you floating alone wondering what to do.

  • On a calm day with light winds, visibility in the snorkel spots along the Na Pali Coast can reach 60 to 80 feet — the kind of clarity where you can see the seafloor detail from the surface without putting your face in the water. Conditions vary by season and swell, and the north shore can get rougher in winter months (November through March), which can reduce visibility temporarily. Your guide will select the best available snorkel site based on conditions that day, so the stop locations aren’t always identical from tour to tour.

  • Turtle sightings are genuinely common on this tour — Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) feed on algae growing on the reef structures along the Na Pali Coast, and the guides know which sites give the best odds of an encounter. That said, these are wild animals and nobody can guarantee a sighting on any given day. Most guests who do this tour in summer months report seeing at least one turtle; winter departures have slightly lower sighting rates due to rougher conditions limiting snorkel time.

  • Honestly, the Na Pali Coast is open ocean and the swells are real — this is one of those tours where motion sickness is worth thinking about before you go, not after you’re already feeling green on the boat. Take Dramamine, Bonine, or apply a Sea-Band acupressure wristband at least 45 minutes before departure. Eat light beforehand, stay hydrated, keep your eyes on the horizon during transits, and avoid sitting in the enclosed cabin if you’re prone to queasiness. The bow of the boat tends to have the most motion; the stern is usually smoother for sensitive guests.

  • Bring a swimsuit worn under a rash guard or quick-dry shirt, reef-safe sunscreen (Hawaii law prohibits oxybenzone and octinoxate-based sunscreens, so check your bottle before you pack), a small dry bag for your phone and valuables, a light towel, and water shoes if you have them though they’re not required. Snorkel gear is provided so you don’t need to bring your own. Leave the big camera bag and anything you’d be devastated to lose overboard at the hotel — the boat deck gets wet and things do occasionally go overboard.

  • Hanalei on the north shore sits much closer to the Na Pali Coast than Port Allen on the south shore, which means less transit time and more time actually at the coastline and in the water. South shore departures can spend 45 minutes to over an hour in each direction just getting to Na Pali, especially in summer when tours run from Port Allen. The tradeoff is that north shore tours are more weather-dependent and are typically offered seasonally — Hanalei departures generally run from May through September when north swell is down and the coastline is accessible by small boat.
