Amenities

Every seat on the MD500 is a window seat — technically a door seat, since the doors come off before the flight. There are no middle passengers craning over your shoulder or glass panels softening the view, which means your photos come out sharp and the experience feels raw in a way that closed aircraft simply can't replicate.
Noise-canceling headsets connect every passenger to the pilot's narration throughout the flight, so when you're hovering above the 3,000-foot walls of the Na Pali Coast and the pilot explains what you're looking at, you can actually hear every word. The intercom also lets passengers ask questions mid-flight — a detail that turns the experience into a conversation rather than a narrated slideshow.

Open Doors Over Na Pali's Cathedral Walls

Hovering at Manawaiopuna Falls

The pilot slows to a hover maybe 200 feet from the waterfall face, and the rotor wash kicks up a fine mist that you can feel on your forearms. It’s the same cascade from the original Jurassic Park opening sequence, and standing at that open door with nothing between you and 400 feet of falling water makes the film reference feel completely beside the point.

Na Pali Sea Cliffs at Eye Level

Flying the Na Pali Coast with the doors off means the smell of salt water and wet vegetation hits you before you even register the visual — the cliffs are so close that the green-black rock face fills your entire field of vision when the pilot hugs the coastline. Then he banks outward over the open ocean and the scale of the 3,000-foot walls becomes something your brain has to catch up to.

Dropping Into Waialeale Crater

The pilot threads into the crater through a break in the clouds and suddenly you’re inside what looks like a cathedral of moss and vertical waterfalls — dozens of them pouring off every wall simultaneously, some barely a ribbon, others heavy curtains of white. The air turns noticeably cooler and the acoustics change, the engine sound bouncing back off the basalt in a way you feel in your chest more than hear. It’s one of the wettest places on earth and you understand exactly why the moment the humidity hits your face and the green closes in around the open door.

  • Aircraft: Hughes MD500

  • Maximum Group Size: 4 passengers

Please note: We always operate a full tour with all seats sold.

Weight Restrictions

  • Individual weight limit: 250 lbs.

  • Pairs: The combined weight limit is 400 lbs. (This includes all clothing, shoes, and carry-on items).

  • If any passenger weighs over 250 lbs or if pairs exceed the 400 lbs combined weight limit, an additional adjacent seat must be purchased at checkout.

The weight and balance of the helicopter are essential to ensure a safe flight, and to comply with FAA regulations, all passengers will be discreetly weighed at check-in.

Front Middle Seat: For groups of 3-4, we require passengers sitting in the front middle seat to weigh 150 lbs or less and be no taller than 5’10” due to weight and height restrictions for that seat.

What to Wear

  • For the Doors-Off Helicopter Tour, you must wear shoes that are laced or strapped on for safety.

  • We recommend bringing a light jacket, preferably waterproof, to protect against the cool and potentially misty breeze.

  • Comfortable clothing (long sleeve shirts, pants, and comfortable shoes) is advised.

  • For everyone’s safety, we do not allow hats, beanies, GoPro head mounts, scarves, turbans, or other headgear, as these can pose a safety risk during boarding, flight, and deboarding.

Can I Bring My Children?

  • Age requirement: Passengers must be at least 10 years old to fly on the Doors-Off tour, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

  • If your child is not yet old enough, we recommend checking with your hotel for babysitting or daycare services.

Seat Requests

  • While you may submit a seat preference at the time of booking, we cannot guarantee specific seat requests.

  • Seating arrangements are made based on the weight and balance of the aircraft, which is critical for ensuring a safe flight.

Weather and Cancellations

  • Weather Policy: Safety is our top priority. We will only fly if the weather conditions allow for a safe and smooth experience. If we determine the weather is unsuitable for flying, we will not operate the tour. Weather patterns on Kauai can change rapidly, and we constantly monitor conditions throughout the day. Please keep in mind that rain often enhances the island’s famous waterfalls and rainbows.

  • Cancellation Policy: You may cancel or make changes to your booking at least 48 hours before your scheduled tour departure with no obligation. Reservations canceled or changed within 48 hours of the scheduled flight, or no-shows, will incur full charges.

What’s Included

  • Doors-off helicopter tour with incredible aerial views of Kauai’s natural beauty.

What You’ll See
During the tour, you’ll fly clockwise around the island, taking in the following highlights:

  • Olokele Canyon

  • The North Shore Beaches from Ke’e to Hanalei

  • The Beautiful Bay and Valley of Hanalei

  • Mt. Waialeale, the heart of Kauai’s ancient volcano

Our pilots will make every effort to show you all of Kauai’s stunning highlights, but flight paths are weather-dependent, so some sites may not be visible depending on conditions.

Kauai MD500 Doors-Off Tour – 60 Minutes: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes — doors-off helicopter operations are a standard, FAA-regulated format that Jack Harter has been running safely on Kauai for decades. Passengers are secured with four-point harnesses, and the open-door configuration is engineered into the aircraft’s design rather than being an improvised modification. The sensation feels exposed at first, but the harness is genuinely secure and most passengers adjust within the first few minutes of flight.

  • The MD500 carries a maximum of four passengers compared to the six or seven seats on larger turbine aircraft, which means the pilot can hover longer, fly lower, and access tighter terrain without the weight and rotor clearance limitations of a bigger machine. Every seat is at an open door — there are no center seats and no glass panels between you and the view. The tradeoff is that the smaller cabin and open doors make it significantly windier and louder, which is part of the appeal for most people who specifically book this format.

  • Kauai is genuinely one of the rainiest places on earth, and weather cancellations are common — Jack Harter will reschedule or refund if conditions make the flight unsafe or significantly limit visibility. Partial clouds are normal and don’t necessarily cancel the flight; the pilots fly these routes constantly and know how to find the best windows in mixed weather. That said, booking earlier in your trip gives you more flexibility to reschedule if needed rather than missing the flight entirely on your last day.

  • The MD500 moves differently than a large tour helicopter — it banks more aggressively, hovers with more pitch variation, and the open doors remove the visual buffer that normally helps your inner ear calibrate. If you’ve had motion sickness issues on boats or small planes, take a non-drowsy motion sickness tablet an hour before your flight and avoid a heavy meal beforehand. Most people who are mildly susceptible do fine; the fresh air from the open doors actually helps more than you’d expect.

  • Yes, and the open-door format is specifically why photographers prefer this aircraft — no glare, no reflections, no glass distortion. You need a wrist strap or tether for any camera or phone you plan to hold near the door, and the operator will remind you of this at the pre-flight briefing. A mirrorless camera or a phone with a solid grip case works well; large telephoto lenses are manageable but awkward in the wind.

  • There is a weight limit, and it’s enforced strictly because the MD500 is a small aircraft with specific balance requirements. All passengers are weighed at check-in and seats are assigned based on those numbers to maintain proper center of gravity. The specific per-person weight limit can vary by operator configuration, so contact Jack Harter directly before booking if you have concerns — they’re straightforward about it and it’s better to confirm in advance than to be turned away at the terminal.
