Mahi-mahi (dorado) is the most consistently caught species on Kauai’s offshore waters, especially from spring through fall, followed by ono (wahoo) and yellowfin tuna (ahi). Blue marlin and striped marlin are legitimate targets in the deeper water off the south and west shores, though they’re never guaranteed — no captain can promise a marlin. The full 8-hour duration versus a half-day significantly improves your odds because you have time to run to productive grounds, work multiple depth changes, and come back to spots that looked fishy on the first pass.

You’ll receive a portion of what you catch, but Hawaii law requires that the fish be divided by the captain since the boat operates under a commercial fishing license. In practice, most captains are generous about this and guests regularly go home with enough mahi-mahi or ahi for a serious dinner. If you’re planning to eat your catch that night, ask the captain at the start of the trip — they’ll usually do their best to make sure you leave with fish in hand.

It depends heavily on the day and the season. Winter swells on the north and south channels can run 4 to 8 feet, making for a rough ride out to the fishing grounds, while summer conditions are typically much calmer. The Bertram’s wide beam helps with stability, but 8 hours is a long time at sea. If you have any history of motion sickness, take a non-drowsy antihistamine like Bonine the evening before — not the morning of — and eat a full breakfast. Ginger chews on board are also worth having in your pocket.

The $1,400 rate covers the whole vessel regardless of how many people in your group are fishing, so it becomes much more reasonable when split among 4 to 6 people. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and apply it before you board — once you’re on the water with no shade and reflected light off the surface, you’ll burn faster than you expect even on a partly cloudy day. A long-sleeve rashguard or light UPF shirt is more practical than relying on sunscreen alone for 8 hours. Pack snacks and extra water beyond whatever the boat provides, bring polarized sunglasses to cut the glare when you’re scanning for surface fish, and wear rubber-soled shoes with grip for the wet deck. Leave anything valuable or fragile at the hotel.
