Amenities

The Bertram sportfisher comes fully rigged with professional-grade trolling equipment — heavy-duty rods, reels loaded with quality line, and lures already matched to the season's target species. You're not wasting the first hour of your charter figuring out gear; the captain and mate have the spread in the water before you clear the reef.
An experienced captain and deckhand are included for the full 8 hours, and these aren't folks just running you to a spot and watching. The mate will work the lines, rig the baits, and put you in the chair when something hits — and when a mahi-mahi starts greyhounding across the surface, you'll be very glad someone who knows what they're doing is running the gaff.

Special Instruction

Eight Hours. Open Ocean. Real Fish.

First Strike Past the Reef

About 45 minutes out of Nawiliwili, when the bottom drops to over a thousand feet and the water shifts from green to a deep electric blue, the outrigger snaps and the reel starts screaming. That sound — a Penn reel peeling line at full drag — is something anglers on this boat talk about for years. The mate’s already moving before you’ve even stood up from your seat.

Mahi-Mahi on the Surface

Kauai’s offshore waters are prime mahi-mahi territory, and when you hook one in clear water you can actually watch it jump — that neon green and yellow flash against the blue is something you don’t see on inshore trips. The captain will keep the boat positioned to work the fish while the mate coaches you through the fight, and when it finally comes over the side you’ll understand why people make this trip every single year.

The Long Ride Home with Fish in the Box

By late afternoon, with the Na Pali cliffs turning amber on the horizon and the cooler heavy with your share of the catch, the exhaustion hits differently than any other kind — arms sore, hands smelling like salt and lure, sunburned in places you forgot to reapply. The mate hoses down the deck while the captain throttles back toward Nawiliwili, and nobody talks much because there’s nothing left to say. You’ll be figuring out how to get that fish home vacuum-sealed before you’ve even stepped off the dock.

Full Day Deep Sea Fishing Kauai — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Mahi-mahi (dorado) is the most consistently caught species on Kauai’s offshore waters, especially from spring through fall, followed by ono (wahoo) and yellowfin tuna (ahi). Blue marlin and striped marlin are legitimate targets in the deeper water off the south and west shores, though they’re never guaranteed — no captain can promise a marlin. The full 8-hour duration versus a half-day significantly improves your odds because you have time to run to productive grounds, work multiple depth changes, and come back to spots that looked fishy on the first pass.

  • You’ll receive a portion of what you catch, but Hawaii law requires that the fish be divided by the captain since the boat operates under a commercial fishing license. In practice, most captains are generous about this and guests regularly go home with enough mahi-mahi or ahi for a serious dinner. If you’re planning to eat your catch that night, ask the captain at the start of the trip — they’ll usually do their best to make sure you leave with fish in hand.

  • It depends heavily on the day and the season. Winter swells on the north and south channels can run 4 to 8 feet, making for a rough ride out to the fishing grounds, while summer conditions are typically much calmer. The Bertram’s wide beam helps with stability, but 8 hours is a long time at sea. If you have any history of motion sickness, take a non-drowsy antihistamine like Bonine the evening before — not the morning of — and eat a full breakfast. Ginger chews on board are also worth having in your pocket.

  • This is a fully exclusive charter, meaning you book the entire boat for your group — no shared trips, no other parties joining you. The $1,400 rate covers the whole vessel regardless of how many people in your group are fishing, so it becomes much more reasonable when split among 4 to 6 people. That exclusivity also means the captain can adjust the fishing plan, the pace, and the target species entirely around what your group wants.

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and apply it before you board — once you’re on the water with no shade and reflected light off the surface, you’ll burn faster than you expect even on a partly cloudy day. A long-sleeve rashguard or light UPF shirt is more practical than relying on sunscreen alone for 8 hours. Pack snacks and extra water beyond whatever the boat provides, bring polarized sunglasses to cut the glare when you’re scanning for surface fish, and wear rubber-soled shoes with grip for the wet deck. Leave anything valuable or fragile at the hotel.
