Manta Ray Night Dive — A Kona Coast Adventure

Cancellation Policy

Please review our cancellation terms before booking your trip.

Full payment is required at the time of reservation. Because we keep our dive groups small and do not overbook our boats, we strictly enforce a 72-hour cancellation policy.

  • Cancellations or changes made more than 72 hours before your scheduled departure will receive a full refund.
  • Any cancellation within 72 hours of the trip is non-refundable, unless you have purchased trip protection.
  • For courses and training programs, cancellations must be made at least one week in advance to qualify for a refund.

Lateness and No-Shows

Please plan to arrive on time for your scheduled charter. Morning traffic around Kona can be heavy, particularly for guests driving north from south of Kailua-Kona. We recommend allowing plenty of extra time for travel.

Our boats depart 15 minutes after the scheduled charter start time. If you arrive late or fail to show up for your trip, no refunds will be issued. It is the guest’s responsibility to be punctual.

Trip Protection

For added flexibility, you can purchase Trip Protection for 10% of your trip cost.

This coverage allows you to cancel at any time, even within the 72-hour window, and receive a full refund (excluding booking and insurance fees).

Please note:

  • Trip protection must be purchased prior to the 72-hour cancellation period.
  • This option is not available for students or training courses.
  • No refunds will be issued for no-shows or late arrivals, even with trip protection.

If We Need to Cancel

Safety is our top priority. We reserve the right to cancel trips for any reason, including unfavorable weather, rough ocean conditions, low passenger counts, mechanical issues, or safety concerns for guests and crew.

If we must cancel, we’ll do our best to reschedule your dive based on availability, or you’ll receive a full refund.

We will contact you using the phone number and/or email address provided at booking. Please ensure your contact details are accurate, as we cannot be held responsible if we’re unable to reach you with important trip updates.

Frequently Asked Questions - Night Manta Diving

  • While Kona Honu Divers specializes in world-class scuba diving, we also founded a dedicated snorkel company that provides one of the best snorkeling experiences in all of Hawaii. Their boats operate right next to our dive charters for easy access and coordination.

  • Yes—but timing is important.

    • If you’ve completed one dive, wait at least 12 hours before driving to Hilo.
    • If you’ve completed two or more dives, wait a minimum of 18 hours.

This is because all routes between Kona and Hilo exceed 2,000 feet in elevation, which is above the post-dive ceiling recommended by DAN (Divers Alert Network).

  • Absolutely! You’re welcome to bring handheld cameras, GoPros, or similar devices. Our boats are camera-friendly, equipped with camera tables and freshwater rinse buckets for your gear.

However, drones are not permitted on or around the vessel.

  • Our 46-foot custom Newton vessel, The Honu One, can fit up to 46 passengers, but we limit the number of divers to 18 for maximum comfort and space.

    • For private charters, the boat can host 30 snorkelers or 24 divers.

Our smaller charter, The Honu Lele, accommodates up to 6 passengers and allows for a maximum of 6 divers per guide.

To reserve a private charter or check group availability, visit the booking section on our website.

  • That depends on the individual situation. We encourage you to contact us directly to discuss your specific needs so we can offer personalized guidance and accommodations.

  • Yes, we highly recommend having dive insurance. Regular medical insurance typically does not cover decompression illness or evacuation costs. Dive-specific insurance provides essential protection and peace of mind while exploring underwater.

  • Divers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the harbor. Please note that taxis and rideshare services (like Uber) may be unreliable unless arranged in advance.

  • Kona enjoys warm, inviting waters year-round:

    • Late summer to early fall: around 80°F (27°C) or slightly higher
    • Winter months: between 74–76°F (23–24°C)

We provide quality 5 mm wetsuits for rent. If you tend to get chilly easily, consider bringing a hood for added warmth.

  • Most Kona dive sites are shallow, offering the best marine life sightings between 15 and 45 feet. Depths beyond 60 feet are less common due to reduced marine activity.

For divers seeking greater depths and more remote sites, check out our Premium Advanced Long-Range Charter for an elevated experience.

  • Yes, every diver must present proof of certification:

    • PADI divers: order a replacement or get an eCard for easy mobile access.
    • SSI, SDI, or NAUI divers: simply look up your profile online and show a verification screenshot.

We may occasionally verify your certification using your booking information, but we recommend always bringing your credentials to ensure a smooth check-in.

  • Tips are always appreciated and go directly to your dive crew. A common guideline is $10 per tank, but if you had an exceptional experience, feel free to show your gratitude as you see fit.

  • The Big Island of Hawai‘i is home to the healthiest and most vibrant coral reefs in the state. The island’s young volcanic coastline provides fresh lava rock substrates, ideal for new coral growth. With fewer residents and minimal coastal pollution, the waters around the Big Island are clearer and cleaner, allowing coral and marine life to thrive.

  • Absolutely — Kona is renowned for having the best diving in Hawaii. The area offers excellent visibility, stunning lava formations, abundant marine life, and memorable encounters with large ocean animals, making it one of the top dive destinations in the Pacific.
