Activity Details
Ranked as one of the best dives in the world, the Manta Ray Night Dive is a must-do for divers. Manta rays are gentle giants with no stingers, barbs, or teeth, making them one of the safest and most awe-inspiring marine creatures to observe. Watching them glide gracefully through the water is an unforgettable experience.

As darkness falls, divers use bright lights to attract plankton, the main food source for manta rays. The plankton congregates around the lights, allowing manta rays to easily feed in large mouthfuls.

Both dives take place at Makako Bay (Garden Eel Cove), starting with a late afternoon dive where guides highlight unique marine life such as the Hawaiian Garden Eels and set up bright lights in preparation for the night dive. Occasionally, manta rays may appear early, giving divers a chance to see them during both dives.

During the surface interval, as the sun sets, our knowledgeable guides share insights into manta ray behavior and give a detailed briefing to prepare divers for the night dive.

When it’s dark, divers re-enter the water to witness the manta rays’ breathtaking feeding ballet—sometimes swimming just inches above their heads! Many guests call this dive one of the highlights of their trip to Hawaii—and even their entire lives.

We limit our group sizes to no more than 5 divers per divemaster, ensuring personalized attention that enhances safety and fun.

Disclaimers
The number of manta rays encountered can vary due to naturally fluctuating plankton levels. Since plankton levels are unpredictable and can change during the dive, we cannot guarantee that manta rays will appear. However, the chance of seeing them is high. If no mantas show up during the dive, our crew will lead an exploratory night reef dive instead.

2-Tank Manta Charter Questions

  • Participants must hold Open Water Diver certification or higher from recognized agencies like PADI, NAUI, or SSI. Advanced Open Water certification is recommended due to night diving elements. All divers should have recent experience and comfort with low-light diving conditions.

  • Our 2-tank private charters accommodate 2-8 certified divers depending on the vessel size and your group’s preferences. Smaller groups allow for more personalized attention and better positioning for optimal manta ray encounters and underwater photography opportunities.

  • The 60-90 minute surface interval includes boat positioning at the second dive site, equipment checks, detailed briefing for the second dive, premium refreshments, and time to review photos or discuss the first dive experience. This interval ensures proper decompression and optimal preparation.

  • Yes! Private charters offer flexibility in site selection based on current conditions, manta ray activity, and your group’s preferences. Our experienced crew will recommend the best combination of sites for optimal encounters while considering factors like experience level and photography interests.

  • We can arrange underwater camera rentals and provide photography guidance for optimal manta ray shots. Our guides are experienced in underwater photography and can assist with camera settings, lighting, and positioning for spectacular manta ray images during both dives.
